Signs That You Have a Toxic Job

It’s normal for people to hate their jobs from time to time, but if you are always miserable due to your work then you should seriously think about changing jobs. You know what they say, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” which is a great motto to live by because it’ll help motivate you to reach even greater heights and go for the job that you really want, and not get stuck at your current crappy and toxic job. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Here are the signs that you are stuck at a toxic job and what to do about it.

You Are Forced to Choose Your Work Over Your Friends and Family

You are forced to go on overtime and miss out on plans

It’s a good thing that you are committed to your work, and that you are striving to become better at your job and get promoted eventually, but it shouldn’t cost you some much-needed bonding time with your friends and family. Yes, going the extra mile is important which could eventually get you the promotion that you’ve been striving for, but it shouldn’t put a strain on your relationship with loved ones. There are even some instances where you are forced to work overtime, and you weren’t even told about it in advance so you are forced to cancel your plans the last minute. If this is happening constantly then you are certainly stuck at a toxic job. You have to find a good balance between work and your personal life, and that means you shouldn’t constantly cancel plans with friends and family because of work which you aren’t required to be doing anyway.

Your Work Defines Your Happiness

You get bummed out from what happened at work

A bad day at work should never define our entire day, and it should never affect our happiness after you’ve clocked out for the day. You shouldn’t let stuff that happened at work to define your overall happiness. Like for example, if you were yelled at by an angry customer or your boss because you made a mistake, it’s alright to feel sorry but after you’ve gone home, you shouldn’t let it bother you too much. What’s done is done, and you can’t do anything about it anymore. You should just do better next time. You should find happiness by achieving goals you’ve set, both inside and outside of work.

Causing You To Lose Sleep

You can’t sleep properly so you’re drained at work

It’s alright to burn the midnight oil every now and then in order to do good at your job, but not if your job requires you to lose sleep on a regular basis. People lose sleep due to some specific reason. Maybe you’re stressed out about work and all the stuff you still need to be done for the next day, or maybe you’re stressed about the upcoming deadline and you’re not sure if you can finish it on time, or maybe you just have a lot on your plate keeps you up at night. Everyone needs to rest and sleep when they get home, so it’s important that when you leave work, you leave behind everything work-related, even the stress and problems for tomorrow and get a good night’s sleep. No job should ever cause you to constantly lose sleep. Being sleep deprived will only make your job harder.

Work Is The Only Thing You Can Think About

It’s hard not to think about work if you have a lot of things on your plate. If you have a lot of things to do at your job, it’s only natural that it might weigh on your mind even when you get home, but this isn’t exactly healthy behavior. You shouldn’t be constantly stressing about work when you are already home because this will only deprive you of much needed R&R. You need time to recharge because focusing solely on work will drain you physically and mentally. If you can’t ignore and not think about work when you’re off the clock or if you notice that work is all you talk about even with friends and family, then you might need a day off to get your mind off of work. Maybe go on a vacation.

Your Desk Looks Like A Campsite

You sleeping under your desk might be too much

The essentials for every desk includes a water bottle, office supplies, extra pair of shoes, snacks (of course!) and maybe a neck pillow. But if your desk is starting to look like more of a campsite rather than a desk at the office, then your job might be taking over your life. There’s nothing wrong with making your desk feel as comfortable for you as possible, but if your workspace becomes homier than your home, then you might have a problem.
